This past weekend marked a big day for most area High School Seniors - Graduation. With my oldest being a Junior and having attended schools in two different districts, the graduation party invitations were numerous. My wife and I felt obligated to attend no less than 7 parties over the weekend; I will not be eating Barbeque Beef again anytime soon. I was doing some reflection on this class and how they differ from my high school class of 26 years ago. Most of these kids have never seen a record album, typewriter or rotary telephone (most probably will never even have a land line). Standard transmission, what's that? Cabbage Patch dolls - huh? What do you mean the Colorado Rockies used to play ice hockey! That said, this class faces many of the same unknowns that many of us in our 40's faced back then. High unemployment, inflation, and a crummy housing market were all around back then. I was for the most part oblivious to the social and economic challenges we were facing back then as I went off to college, but in looking back it was very similar.

I'm sure our parents were just as concerned with us high schoolers back then. The lack of work ethic, ambition, and good-old teenage angst haven't changed much. However, I think the influence of technology has compounded these issues for this generation somewhat. I remember having to make my own fun, the words "I'm bored" were not allowed growing up. I can honestly say that I have never heard those words in my home. My teenagers can always find a way to burn hours on video or online games, Facebook or texting. Even though we limit the time we allow our kids to use these things, I think that unmonitored they would spend their entire day half-conscience online. My parents probably felt this way to a degree about television but there are so many more "lazy" choices now. I doubt we're the only company to rid ourselves of employees who simply can't work without their cell phone in their pouches to facilitate day-long text conversations on the clock.

My hope is that this generation will figure it all out as we did. Work ethic and ambition aren't dead in young Americans it just lies dormant.

CRA Golf Tournament - August 21, 2009

CRA's Annual Golf Tournament will be held on Friday, August 21st at Saddle Rock Golf Course in Aurora, Colorado.

For 27 years, CRA members have been coming together each summer for a round of golf, a little competition and to socialize with friends and associates within Colorado's roofing industry. In most recent years, the tournament has evolved into a fundraiser for future generations. The profits from the tournament are donated to CRA's Scholarship funds at both Red Rock's Community College & Colorado State University's Construction Management programs.

We will once again head to Southeast Denver. As we found out last year, Saddle Rock offers a memorable layout with great hole diversity. We look forward to another enjoyable tournment.

Sign up to play today . . .

The fee is $90.00 per player. This includes all green fees, golf cart, range balls, golf tees, green repair tool, bag tag, coffee and lunch buffet. The tournament is a Four Man scramble. Teams will be assigned by the golf pro by your average score.

Hole sponsorships are available. For $150, you can become a sponsor and have your company name displayed on a hole sign, at the clubhouse and in the monthly newsletters timely to the tournament. Or, DONATE a prize for the awards program.

Pinnacol Assurance Issues $120 Million in General Dividends to Colorado Businesses

DENVER, May 17, 2009 - Pinnacol Assurance, Colorado's assured and trusted source for workers' compensation insurance, announced today it is issuing general dividend checks totaling approximately $120 million to its policyholders. Over the past five years Pinnacol has returned a total of $347 million in general dividends to Colorado's business community.

This year, 89 percent of Pinnacol policyholders will receive a dividend. The average dividend check is approximately $2,200. Checks are calculated based on the size of a policyholder's annual premium compared to claims costs. Pinnacol policyholders in all 64 Colorado counties are getting checks at a time when many Colorado businesses could use an economic boost.

"Our ability to return a general dividend to our policyholders is a direct result of two things," said Ken Ross, Pinnacol president and CEO. "First, our policyholders have demonstrated an incredible commitment to workplace safety and an undeniable focus on lowering their claims. Second, the dividend speaks to Pinnacol's strength and stability and our commitment to returning money to the people it belongs to - our policyholders. We can't underestimate the power of returning this money to Colorado businesses during these troubling economic times."

Dividends reward Pinnacol policyholders with strong safety records and low claims costs and are based on actual performance during a specific period of time. This year's dividend is based on policyholder performance between June 2007 - June 2008. Pinnacol's board of directors began discussing the total amount that would be returned to policyholders in late 2008 based on the projected financial results for the year. Final determination of the dividend was made after the company's annual audit was completed.

Portions of Pinnacol's $120 million general dividend also include the association programs. From Insurance to Metal Roofing, CRA Members get Educated in May

On May 15, CRA members attended our membership luncheon featuring Brad Moody and Mike Roark of Moody Insurance Agency who did a tag-team presentation on the current state of the insurance industry. The presentation covered industry trends including increased crimes of internal theft in companies (equipment/forgery); EPLI (employment practices liability insurance) coverage due to rising harassment cases; managing employee benefits - specifically COBRA coverage as employees are laid off; equipment coverage policies; and surety performance bonds. The presentation also included an update on Colorado Senate Bill 281 regarding auditing and oversight of Pinnacol Assurance, which is awaiting the Governor's signature. Wrap Up's were discussed along with some cautionary advice and the presentation ended with a recap of construction defects. Beginning with a history of where it started up to the passage of HB1161 and a discussion on how construction defects continues to evolve as the law evolves. We thank Brad and Mike for an informative lunch and the much needed advice and guidance.

On May 27, our pinpoint seminar on Metal Roofing was well attended. Given in two parts, Joe LaCrue spoke on sheet metal material data including coatings and finishes and the sustainability of cool metal roofing and energy efficiency.

Jeff Patch then presented the sheet metal roofing types/guages and demonstrated various applications and techniques. The seminar was well done and very informative. We thank Joe and Jeff or a great seminar. CRA would also like to thank Premium Panels for donating their location and space for this seminar.

ITEMS TO NOTE . . . FROM ACROSS THE NATION

New NRCA president Rob McNamara testified last month before the House Small Business Committee on climate change legislation that is being considered and specifically what the effects would be on small business. His message: The roofing industry, composed almost entirely of small businesses, can have a huge effect on energy conservation, but we don't think taxes and mandates are the way to get there. (You can find the link to Rob's testimony on NRCA's Web site, www.nrca.net.) The administration's climate change plan includes a goal of reducing U.S. greenhouse gases by 14 percent below 2005 levels by 2030 and then by more than 80 percent by 2050. A coalition that includes NRCA as a member released a study last month showing that by 2030 the administration's plan would eliminate 3 million jobs and cost the average household $2,100 per year.

The other big issue for NRCA has been the so-called Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA). NRCA is an active participant in the Coalition for a Democratic Workforce, a group that opposes EFCA, which would allow unions to organize any company simply by getting a majority of workers to sign-or check-an authorization card. Significantly, the measure does not have enough support in the Senate to end a promised filibuster. Most notably, Sens. Arlen Specter (D-Pa.) and Blanche Lincoln (D-Ark.) have indicated they will oppose the measure in its current form. All other Republicans are opposed, and several Democrats have not yet declared their positions. Although NRCA is pleased with these developments, they remain concerned that an unfavorable compromise will be put forward and enormous pressure from organized labor could sway the small number of votes needed for passage.

NRCA is also monitoring developments at the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) with some care. NRCA's Tom Shanahan serves on OSHA's Advisory Committee on Construction Safety and Health and has met with senior OSHA officials recently. His take: New regulations are coming, and they will affect us directly. At the top of the list are fall protection and ergonomics, issues that have been dormant for quite some time. NRCA expects to see OSHA rescind the "interim" fall-protection standard for residential construction that allows the use of "slide guards," or brackets.

The federal government has postponed-again-implementation of an executive order and a related procurement law that require federal contractors to use E-verify. The postponement-the third one-delays implementation until June 30; there is speculation that the administration is using the time to review the entire rule
