 PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Greetings

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a safe, healthy, and festive holiday season with your loved ones. As we step into 2025, let’s take a quick look back at the moments that shaped the association in 2024. Here’s to a fresh start, but first, a brief reflection on last year!

First and foremost, I just want to say a big, heartfelt “thank you” to everyone who made 2024 such a great one for our industry. It’s been my second year as president for our association, and I’ve loved seeing how we all came together—whether it was tackling another tough hail season, exploring new innovations, or sharing tips and best practices.

I want to thank all of our CRA board members, committee members, training center instructors and helpers, YEP crew, and all our volunteers across the board who poured their time and energy into making this year a success. Whether you were organizing events, handling logistics, lending your expertise, or simply cheering everyone on, your efforts truly made a difference and kept our community thriving. We couldn’t have done it without you!

To all of our members who joined forces on several Habitat for Humanity projects or made a real difference with our flagship community service project this year: Installing a brand-new roof for Thriving Families in Denver.

Thank you to Jamie Williams and Ryan Plunkett, who are stepping down from the board; we truly appreciate everything you’ve done. Your time, commitment, and insights have helped shape where we are today, and we’re so grateful for all you’ve contributed. We wish you the very best in your next adventures.

I wanted to share some thoughts. I had back in November during that nice cold spell we had, and it gave me some time to reflect on why I get so irritated when one of these long cold snaps sets in. Yes, it shuts down our roofing business. And that costs money, even if you’re a sub-based company. I always worry that our roofers might be out looking for an easier, warmer place to work. And the reality is, for most of us, that has happened! But in the bigger picture of life, it’s kind of nice when everything but the very essential businesses shut down. Aren’t we all just too busy? There never seems to be enough time to just stop and enjoy the people who surround us, those who support us and our careers, your kids and families who have loved what you have provided them over the years, those that have made you who you are today. And what about a little rest and relaxation? If you say, “What’s that?” like most of us do, then you probably need the R&R. Our world moves at a pace like never before. The demands on our minds and bodies are too much a lot of the time. So, take the next snowy days to come to find some time to unwind and enjoy the moments you get to have with your families while others might not have that pleasure. The big words right now are SELF CARE. Not sure about you, but I never heard that concept growing up. I think it’s got some merit in these crazy days and times.

Looking ahead to 2025, I’m excited to welcome three new board members: Chris Gonzales, Lawrence Kerr, and Steve Pohl. We can’t wait to hear your ideas and see the positive impact you’ll bring to the table.

A huge shout-out also goes to our sponsors for their support and belief in what we do. Your backing made it possible for us to host fun and educational events, provide networking opportunities, offer roofing classes with over 100 students at the Training Center, and advance our advocacy efforts—all of which help us continue pushing the roofing industry forward.

2025 is lining up to be an exciting year, and I hope to meet more of our great members at some of our exciting events. Of course, our association starts the New Year with a bang with our ever-growing CRA Trade Show in January and then the pinnacle event of the Awards Dinner showcasing some of the beautiful projects our members had completed in 2024. It's a great night to bring our industry together for one night of celebrating our successes.

Lastly, I want to thank you all again for your involvement, feedback, and willingness to share your knowledge, and that is what makes this community special. We’ve accomplished a lot this year, and I know we’ll keep building on that momentum in 2025—aiming higher, staying safer, and getting even better at what we do.

Thanks again for being part of this journey. Here’s to making 2025 another year of growth, connection, and success.

2025 Dues Increase

2025 Dues Increase

A message from the Board of Directors

Dear Valued Members:

The association will be implementing a modest dues increase. For 2025, after a thorough review of revenues and expenses, the CRA Board made the thoughful decision to raise membership dues by $25. This adjustment is necessary to keep pace with rising costs and ensure we can meet all financial obligations. We understand the impact this may have on your budget, but we believe CRA membership remains a great value, given the extensive benefits provided by our Association

Thank you for your continued support and commitment to the CRA. We truly value your membership and look forward to serving you in the year ahead.

Dues invoices were emailed on January 2, 2025. If you are the primary contact at your company and have not received it, please contact Diana Johnson for a resend.

Golf Tournament Photo Gallery

CRA's August Golf Tournament at Riverdale was a huge success! With 315 members, volunteers, sponsors, and their guests joining us for a day of relaxation and fun, we were able to raise $15,000 for the CRA Training Center and $7,530 for the Rob McReynolds Raise the Roof Fund. This event wouldn't have been possible without the tremendous support from our sponsors. Your generosity truly made a difference and helped us achieve these incredible results. A heartfelt thank you to all of our volunteers for your unwavering commitment and dedication to our mission. We are so grateful for your continued support, and we look forward to even more successful events together with all our members in the future. We appreciate each and every one of you!

Sporting Clay Photo Gallery

We are sorry these are late, but here is the October 11 Sporting Clay Tournament photo gallery.

Thank you once again to everyone for making this annual event a success. We had another beautiful Colorado fall day, and it was still a fun time for all, all while raising funds for Rob McReynolds' Raise the Roof Fund and CRA’s Consumer Education advertising efforts. We had over 170 shooters and 20 volunteers who took time out of their busy fall schedules to enjoy a day of camaraderie, test their shooting skills, and have some fun. Participants enjoyed a delicious BBQ box lunch, followed by prize giveaways, the announcement of the 1st, 2nd, and Middle of the Road teams, and recognition of the top two individual male and female shooters.

A special thanks to our event, breakfast, lunch, beverage, and man-station sponsors for their generous support and help in making the event possible.

CRA YEP 2nd Annual Holiday Gala is a blast!

The CRA Young & Emerging Professionals Group kicked off the holiday season with a fantastic casino night! It was a great evening of networking, food and drinks, table games, and plenty of fun. The event also helped raise funds for our workforce education outreach and recruitment efforts at vocational schools and beyond. A big thank you to everyone who attended and supported this exciting night—your contributions will make a lasting impact!  Thank you to all that attended and extra thanks to our sponsors!

Corporate Transparency Act Back on Hold as of 12/26/24.

On December 26, 2024, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit paused the enforcement of the Corporate Transparency Act (CTA), thus pausing the beneficial ownership reporting requirements for U.S. small business owners. This reverses the earlier decision from December 23, 2024, to reinstate the CTA and its reporting requirements. The CTA remains on hold for now while under review. Oral argument before the Fifth Circuit on the matter has been scheduled for March 25, 2025.

The CTA mandates that owners of 32.6 million small businesses register personal details with FinCEN. However, due to a recent injunction, no filings are required under the CTA at the moment, including the initial beneficial ownership information (BOI) reports that were due by January 13, 2025, for companies formed before 2024.

Dec. 27, 2024. FinCEN on its BOI webpage issued a new alert stating:  In light of a recent federal court order, reporting companies are not currently required to file beneficial ownership information with FinCEN and are not subject to liability if they fail to do so while the order remains in force. However, reporting companies may continue to voluntarily submit beneficial ownership information reports.

Reporting Companies and affected individuals should carefully monitor developments and be prepared to file if the injunction is once again lifted.

IRS Boosts Mileage Rate for 2025

The Internal Revenue Service on Thursday announced that the 2025 standard mileage rate will go up by 3 cents per mile to 70 cents for the optional mileage rate for automobiles driven for business.

That's up from 67 cents a mile in 2024. The new rate kicks in beginning Jan. 1 and it would apply to 2025 tax returns that would be filed in 2026. The rates apply to fully electric and hybrid automobiles, as well as gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles.

It is important to note under the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, taxpayers cannot claim a miscellaneous itemized deduction for unreimbursed employee travel expenses. Taxpayers also cannot claim a deduction for moving expenses, except members of the Armed Forces on active duty moving under orders to a permanent change of station.

COLORADO LEGISLATIVE WATCH
Legislative & Advocacy Update

As we start the new year, I wanted to take the opportunity to mention several notable new laws going into effect on January 1st.

Hands-Free Driving Law: Drivers must refrain from holding their phones while driving. Hands-free devices like car speakers and mounts are allowed. Violations will result in fines starting at $75, with increasing penalties for subsequent offenses. This can only be ticketed as a secondary offense.

Minimum Wage Increase: Colorado’s minimum wage rises by 39 cents to $14.81 per hour, with tipped workers earning $11.79 per hour. This increase is part of the state's annual adjustments based on inflation.

Child Passenger Safety Law: The law updates requirements for child car safety. Children must use a car seat or booster until age 9, rear-facing car seats are required for children under 2 and 40 pounds, and all children under 18 must be properly restrained.

Stronger Protections for Minor Workers: House Bill 1095 increases penalties for violations of the Colorado Youth Employment Opportunity Act, requiring employers to compensate affected minors.

For the upcoming 2025 legislative session, expect the reintroduction of the following bills:

  • Construction Defects Bill: A new bill addressing construction defects.

  • Wage Theft Bill: A proposed bill addressing wage theft, following the veto of the 2024 version.

Additionally, insurance-related bills include:

  • A bill allowing homeowners to appeal their wildfire risk score and access insurance discounts.

  • A bill creating programs for hail-resistant roofs and a state reinsurance fund to lower wildfire insurance costs.

If you have concerns or questions about any of these, please feel free to reach out. Or, if you are aware of any other specific legislation coming up in 2025 that will affect our industry, please contact me so that we can monitor it and share it with the membership. With your help, we can continue to work together for positive changes in the roofing industry.

Happy New Year!

Preventing Slips on Snow and Ice

To prevent slips, trips, and falls, employers should clear snow and ice from walking surfaces, and spread deicer, as quickly as possible after a winter storm. When walking on snow or ice is unavoidable workers should be trained to:

    • Wear footwear that has good traction and insulation (e.g. insulated and water resistant boots or rubber over-shoes with good rubber treads)

    • Take short steps and walk at a slower pace to react quickly to changes in traction

Preventing Falls When Removing Snow from Rooftops and Other Elevated Surfaces

OSHA’s Hazard AlertSnow Removal: Know the Hazards Pamplet, and winter weather webpages   provide guidance to employers on how to prevent serious injuries and fatalities. Employers should consider options to avoid working on roofs or elevated heights, plan ahead for safe snow removal and must:

    • Provide required fall protection and training when working on the roof or elevated heights

    • Ensure ladders are used safely (e.g. clearing snow and ice from surfaces)

    • Use extreme caution when working near power lines

    • Prevent harmful exposure to cold temperatures and physical exertion
