PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Hey Everyone,

Hope you’ve all had a great July so far and got to enjoy some well-deserved time with family, friends—and maybe even a few fireworks earlier this month!

As we reach the halfway point of the year, it’s a great time to check in, celebrate the progress we’ve made, and gear up for what’s ahead in the Colorado roofing industry.

It’s already been a busy year, and we’re seeing some exciting trends across the industry: strong demand, emerging technologies, and evolving regulations. Whether you’re managing material delays, scaling up your crews, or adopting new tools to streamline operations, the CRA is here to support you.

Don’t forget to take advantage of our training programs, advocacy efforts, and networking opportunities—all designed to help you stay informed, connected, and ahead of the curve.

📚 Training & Events

We’re keeping the momentum going with our summer events and workshops. Here’s what’s coming up:

📅 August 14 Golf Tournament (sold out, but a few sponsor opportunities available)

📅 August 26 - Galvanize Law on Mechanics Lien's

📅 August: Training Center registration for Fall classes will open

Be sure to check our website and register early—spots fill up fast!

The new addition to the CRA Training Center is also coming along nicely. We’re looking forward to hosting Fall training sessions and events in the newly revamped space. Once it’s complete, we hope you’ll come check it out!

In other exciting news, planning is already underway for the 2025 CRA Trade Show, scheduled for January 29, right after IRE. This event has grown significantly over the past few years, and vendor registration is now open—so don’t miss the chance to secure your booth. For attendees, mark your calendars! Registration will open later this year.

Looking even further ahead, we’re thrilled to announce that the 2026 CRA Awards Dinner will be held at the National Western Legacy Club next February—a fitting venue to celebrate CRA’s 25th Anniversary. More details coming soon!

🏛️  Advocacy in Action

Our Government Relations Committee continues to monitor proposed legislation and advocate for the best interests of Colorado’s roofing industry. From labor laws to tax incentives for energy-efficient upgrades, we’re working to ensure roofing contractors have a voice at the table.

In case you missed them, here are a few key legislative updates from the 2025 session worth noting:

HB 25‑1130 – Strengthened Labor Requirements
Signed into law in June, this bill enforces stricter wage and benefit standards for workers on publicly funded construction projects. If you’re bidding on government work, now’s the time to make sure your compliance processes are solid.

SB 25‑185 – Expanded Homeowner Rights
This new law clarifies that both current and future homeowners have the right to file negligence claims against contractors and subcontractors. It’s a good reminder to double-check your quality control measures, documentation practices, and insurance coverage.

HB 25‑1261 – Construction Defects Expansion (Defeated)
This bill proposed expanding defect claim timelines and limiting arbitration protections. Thanks to strong industry opposition, it did not pass—a major win for contractors concerned about increased litigation exposure.

We’ll continue tracking legislation and keeping you informed on what matters most. If you hear about a bill or policy on the horizon that could impact our industry, reach out and let us know!

📰 Other Industry Highlights

Here are a few key trends and updates happening across the roofing industry right now:

🔹 Material Prices Leveling Off
After years of volatility, many suppliers report that material costs are beginning to stabilize. This gives contractors a more reliable foundation for accurate estimating and long-term planning.

🔹 Insurance Claim Changes
Adjuster practices and claim approvals are shifting across the board. Make sure your team stays informed. CRA’s Insurance Workshops are a great way to stay ahead of the curve.

🔹 Drone & Tech Integration
More roofing companies are turning to drones, CRMs, and aerial measurements to improve efficiency. If you haven’t started exploring these tools, now’s a great time to begin.

⛈️ Storm Season Reminder

Storm season is officially here—and for many of us, that means long hours, quick turnarounds, and a surge in customer calls. Unfortunately, it also brings out less-than-reputable operators trying to take advantage of homeowners.

CRA is ramping up our consumer awareness campaign and adding more commercial roof tips this year as well to help protect the public and uphold the integrity of our industry. We’re encouraging all members to practice clear, proactive communication with customers—especially regarding timelines, permit requirements, insurance processes, and realistic expectations.

Taking the time to walk customers through each step builds trust and reduces the risk of confusion or conflict.

We also urge members to reinforce the importance of working with local, licensed, and insured contractors. Too often, scam operations swoop in after hailstorms, delivering poor-quality work—or no work at all. Promote the value of professionalism, and direct homeowners to the CRA Contractor Directory to help elevate industry standards across Colorado.

👷 Labor Shortage: A Growing Concern

  • Colorado, like much of the U.S., is facing a persistent shortage of skilled labor. Fewer young professionals are entering the trades, while many experienced workers are retiring.

  • Nationally, there were an estimated 240,000–248,000 open jobs in construction as of Spring 2025—and demand shows no signs of slowing.

  • To compete, many contractors are turning to recruitment bonuses, in-house training programs, apprenticeship opportunities, and other creative incentives to attract and retain talent.

  • The pressure is even greater during storm season. With fewer available crews, response times slow and schedules tighten—just as customer expectations are on the rise.

  • Add in shifting insurance protocols and ongoing material cost challenges, and we’ve got a “perfect storm” of delays, rising costs, and increased stress.

✅ What Can You Do?

Here are a few ways to help your business weather the season:

- Plan ahead by lining up backup crews and resources in advance.
- Communicate clearly with customers about delays and the broader workforce challenges.
- Invest in your team through perks, training, or mentorship to retain valuable employees.
- Promote quality and trust by highlighting your licensing, CRA membership, and professional standards—  especially when others underbid to win fast business.

Check out this short explainer video (1–2 min) on how the construction labor shortage is delaying projects and driving up costs.

By acknowledging these workforce pressures in both your internal planning and customer messaging, you’re not only protecting your operations—you’re also reinforcing your reputation as a dependable, professional contractor.

And don’t forget: the CRA Homeowner Re-Roofing Checklist is a great resource to help homeowners understand the value of hiring a licensed, local contractor—especially when demand is high and crews are stretched thin.

That’s it for now—thanks for all the hard work you’re doing out there. Stay cool, stay safe, and let’s keep building something great together.

Recognizing the Volunteers Who Make It Happen

      #CRA #GreatMembers #RoofingExcellence #Networking

From giving their time and talent to showing up with energy and heart, these individuals are a big part of what keeps our association strong. We’re grateful for everything they do—and we’re excited to keep celebrating the people who help make it all happen.

      Michael Baker, CertainTeed

Meet Michael Baker, Territory Manager at CertainTeed and a dedicated CRA volunteer with over 10 years in the industry!

Michael is passionate about providing homeowners with quality Class 4 products and helping contractors deliver outstanding service. He’s committed to changing the perception of the construction industry by showing that most contractors are hardworking, trustworthy professionals who take great pride in their work.

Through his work on CRA’s Marketing Committee and Sporting Clay Tournament Committee, Michael helps spread positive messages to homeowners while supporting fellow contractors in growing their businesses and raising industry standards.

When he’s not volunteering or working, Michael enjoys an active Colorado lifestyle, coaching his boys’ sports teams, hunting, fishing, and spending summer weekends hosting BBQs with his family and friends.

👏 Thank you, Michael, for the positive impact you make both in our industry and community!

      Arik Koch, Rocky Mountain Reps

We’re excited to spotlight Arik Koch, Sales Rep at Rocky Mountain Reps Inc. and proud CRA member for the past six years. At Rocky Mountain Reps—an industry leader in commercial roofing support—Arik helps provide technical advice, training, and design services across Colorado, Wyoming and Montana... and now the Pacific Northwest, where he has taken on the role of Vice President at the newly launched RMR Northwest

Arik loves the ever-changing nature of the roofing industry. From adapting to new technologies to navigating challenges like COVID and tariffs, he’s driven by the constant learning—and by helping shape the industry’s future.

That passion led him to co-found the CRA Young & Emerging Professionals Committee, believing younger voices deserve a role in where the industry is heading. While he says his impact is still growing, the friendships, leadership skills, and personal growth he’s found through volunteering have been invaluable.

A favorite CRA memory? His first education course, where the energy, camaraderie, and encouragement—especially from roofing vets like Tim Black and Ray Phillips—left a lasting impression.

Off the clock, you’ll find Arik snowboarding, biking, or camping in the mountains—or cracking jokes on stage with his comedy group Diet Milk. He also fully supports having French toast for dinner.

Thank you, Arik, for your energy, vision, and commitment to the CRA community!  Best of luck in the Northwest—and don’t be a stranger when you’re back in town!

      Hannah Kane, Steve Kane's Sales

Meet Hannah Kane, a passionate Sales Representative at Steve Kane's Sales, where she serves as a manufacturer’s rep for commercial roofing and building products. For Hannah, roofing is more than just a career — it’s a family tradition. Working alongside her father, Steve Kane, is one of the things she values most in her professional journey.

There are volunteers… and then there are volunteers like Hannah — the kind who jump in, show up, lead, create, and inspire.

Hannah has been a proud member of the Colorado Roofing Association for over five years, and from the very beginning, she’s made a lasting impact. She was part of the original founding group of our Young & Emerging Professionals (YEP) Committee back in 2019, and today, she remains one of its strongest pillars. She didn’t just help shape the group’s mission — she continues to shape its future as the creative force behind our social media and event materials, keeping our messaging fresh, engaging, and professional.

💙 And when she’s not busy elevating the roofing industry? You’ll likely find Hannah exploring Colorado’s mountains (Vail is a favorite), hitting the golf course, flowing through a hot yoga session, or kicking back with her go-to snack: chips and salsa — the ultimate fuel for any adventure.

👏 Thank you, Hannah, for your vision, energy, and dedication to growing the next generation of roofing leaders!

ITEMS OF NOTE - JUST IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

⚠️ Scam Alert: Beware of Real Estate Scam Targeting Roofing Contractors

We want to alert our CRA members about a growing scam trend affecting roofing contractors across Colorado. Fraudsters are targeting homes that are listed for sale, posing as the property owner or a representative to authorize roofing work.

Once the work is underway—or even completed—these individuals vanish without paying, leaving contractors unpaid and the actual homeowners unaware that any roofing was ever authorized. This not only results in financial loss for contractors, but can also create legal confusion and reputational risk.

Please stay vigilant and double-check property ownership, especially when working on homes currently on the market. If something feels off, don’t hesitate to pause and verify.
